English has three strands: Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing.


At Colo Vale, these are some additional programs to support class Literacy teaching programs.

Home Readers

Students are encouraged to read daily. Home readers are in classrooms. Stage 1 students are matched to their reading level and are expected to read as part of their homework. Students in Stage 2 (years 3 and 4) and Stage 3 (years 5 and 6) are likewise expected to read as part of their homework.Parent's often volunteer to support the Home Reading Book Exchange on a daily basis.


Premier's Reading Challenge

Students are encouraged to register for the Premier's Reading Challenge.Students need to borrow from the library from the recommended books, record their reading and report their progress to the librarian.


Support Teacher for Learning Assistance
 
This specialist teacher provides advice and support for teachers, parents and students.This teacher is also part of a support network who provide training and resource advice.
 

Comprehension Across the Curriculum

This program is designed to help students use strategies to understand what they are reading in all subject areas. Specialist support teachers are supporting this strategy particularly in grades 3 and 4.


Reading Recovery Year 1 Program

Selected students are specifically tutored by a specialised reading recovery teacher to support their literacy. Each child who enters the program actually is receiving an additional $10,000 investment in their learning at no cost to the parent.


Debating and Public Speaking Program

Students in years 3,4,5 and 6 may participate in interschool debates as part of our Bowral Learning Community, Premier's Debating Challenge and Multicultural Public Speaking. All students participate in public speaking opportunities through class programs and school assemblies.


School Library

The school librarian is available 3 days a week-Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students may borrow during their library lesson or any morning. Classes can access the library every day. Students are encouraged to borrow every week.
